LinkedIn has become one of the most important social tools for event and meetings professionals, especially for networking and making new connections. However, the social network allows for more than just connecting to other professionals and passing along your resume. LinkedIn is quickly growing into a more functional environment where users can share thought leadership articles, discuss news topics and trends, and ask questions.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, there are always new groups being created or discovered on LinkedIn every day! However, these groups are a good starting point if you’re looking to participate in a professional community on LinkedIn. Each group has something unique to offer – some are smaller and more engaging, others are larger and filled with a wide variety of topics relating to events and meetings. Some of these groups are specific to a particular aspect of the industry (like marketing) and others are open to all industry topics. You’re bound to find one you enjoy.
No matter which group you join, be sure to follow some basic rules of online community etiquette:
- Don’t Spam – A lot of LinkedIn groups succumb to the common struggle of being filled with members who only ever post their own content to the group, but do little to actually add to it beyond that. This results in a long feed of links but very little discussion – and it’s even worse when the links being posted aren’t even relevant to the group. Be sure that if you’re sharing content, you’re genuinely adding value to the community and not just posting to another social media outlet.
- Keep it Relevant – It can be easy to get a little off topic in large group discussions – especially in this day and age where everything is incredibly connected. However, it’s important to remember that everyone in the group is there in order to engage with content and members of their industry. Make sure that you’re sticking to the topics relevant to the group.
- Engage – These days, everyone is all about their personal brand and sharing thought leadership – people are eager to share what they know, but they’re a little more hesitant when it comes to asking about what they don’t know. Be willing to strike up discussions and conversations and ask questions! LinkedIn groups are all about networking and learning.
